New projects launched for international space missions including JUICE

Space and planetary research is teamwork. This week, the Netherlands Space Office NSO, in collaboration with the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), funded new projects that promote collaboration between Dutch researchers working on international space missions.

The awarded projects help scientists strengthen their leading role in international space missions and further develop space knowledge networks. This strengthens the Netherlands’ position in international space research, in the fields of Earth observation, planetary science, and astronomy.

Juice PI project awarded

Three projects received funding under the PI support program. The Dutch PIs are involved in missions within the ESA Earth observation and science programs. The funding helps scientists successfully fulfill their PI role and is also explicitly intended to allow scientists outside their own group to benefit from the knowledge and experience of their space mission.

One of the awarded projects is used for the PRIDE experiment on JUICE, by Giuseppe Cimò (JIVE, TU Delft). This project supports Cimò’s Dutch PI role within the PRIDE experiment of ESA’s JUICE mission, which will investigate Jupiter and its moons. The funding will be used to open-source essential algorithms and software, thus reaching the broader Dutch scientific community.

Investing in the future of space travel

The scientific program is part of Dutch space policy and is funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. With these awards, the Netherlands is making targeted investments in cutting-edge research, collaboration, and the next generation of space missions.
